To research ethics opinions issued by the American Bar Association (ABA), begin your research using Bloomberg Law's ABA/Bloomberg Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct

To access the Lawyer’s Manual:

  1. Sign in to Bloomberg Law.
    • If you do not have a Bloomberg Law account, please register for your Bloomberg Academic Account. Use this registration link to register your account. Remember to use your university email address to register your academic account.
    • If you have forgotten your username and/or password, use the Forgot Username/Password? link to retrieve your account information.
  2. Use the Menu under the Search Box on the Home page and select Practice Centers.
  3. Next, from the dropdown menu select Legal Ethics & Professional Responsibility.
  4. This collection of legal ethics news, ABA ethics opinions, model rules, court opinions, and other titles comprise the Lawyer's Manual

To search Lawyer's Manual for ABA Ethics Opinions: 

  1. Enter keywords in the Search Box and select Lawyer's Manual on Professional Conduct from the Select Sources menu. Next, select Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct: ABA Ethics Opinions from the menu.
  2. Alternatively, browse opinions in the ABA Ethics Opinions box. 

Additionally, most of the ABA's Ethics are available on Westlaw or Lexis.

Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA)

To research ethics opinions issued by the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA), begin your research using Bloomberg Law's ABA/Bloomberg Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct

To access the Lawyer’s Manual:

  1. Sign in to Bloomberg Law.
    • If you do not have a Bloomberg Law account, please register for your Bloomberg Academic Account. Use this registration link to register your account. Remember to use your university email address to register your academic account.
    • If you have forgotten your username and/or password, use the Forgot Username/Password? link to retrieve your account information.
  2. Use the Menu under the Search Box on the Home page and select Practice Centers.
  3. Next, from the dropdown menu select Legal Ethics & Professional Responsibility.
  4. This collection of legal ethics news, ABA ethics opinions, model rules, court opinions, and other titles comprise the Lawyer's Manual

To search Lawyer's Manual for ISBA Ethics Opinions: 

  1. Enter keywords in the Search Box and select Lawyer's Manual on Professional Conduct from the Select Sources menu. Next, select Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct: State Ethics Opinions (Digests) from the menu.
  2. Alternatively, search opinions in the State & Local Ethics Opinions (Digests) box. Enter Indiana and select Indiana - Ind. State Bar Ass'n (IN).
  3. Also search using the State Ethics Resources box and select Indiana on the map. ISBA Ethics Opinions are available in the Search Ethics Opinions (Digests) By Issuing Authority box and select Indiana State Bar Association.

Westlaw provides access to ethics opinions issued by the Judicial Qualifications Commission/Judicial Nominating Commission of the Indiana Courts, and limited advisory opinions from the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission. Coverage begins in 1988.

To access Indiana Ethics Opinions on Westlaw: 

  1. Sign in to Westlaw.
  2. Under Content types, select Administrative Decisions & Guidance.
  3. Under By Topic/Type, select Ethics & Disciplinary Opinions.
  4. Select Indiana.
  5. The Indiana Judicial Ethics Page displays the ten most recent opinions. 
  6. Search the ethics opinions using the Search Box.

The ISBA provides free online access to its ethics opinions from 1961 to the present. Note: full-text searching is not available. Use the Index by Subject to locate ethics opinions on a topic.
