About Citation Managers - EndNote and Zotero

EndNote and Zotero are citation managers. Citation managers help you manage bibliographic citations.

Citation managers collect citation information from online sources, e.g. databases. Citation managers organize and format citations in-text and in your reference list.

EndNote is free to members of Indiana University / IUPUI students, faculty and staff

Zotero is open source -- free to everyone

Step 1

• Windows Installation Notes
  • The EndNote 20 download comes as a zip file and should be unzipped to the same folder
  • To unzip the folder:
    • Rick click to the zipped file (or file to be downloaded)
    • Choose the extract command
    • There will be two files
  • Click on program to install and run it
  • Run install EndNote

Step 2

• EndNote Online Setup Notes
  • Navigate to EndNote.com
  • Click 'EndNote Online Login' (top right)
  • Create account by clicking on 'Register'
    • Retain your login information for future use
  • Authenticate account using the email sent to you

Download Zotero and Web Extension

Download Zotero program and website Extension on the website. Note: you will need to download updates to the program.

Step 2

Set up online Zotero.org account. This allows you to access your citation manager across devices and share your citations with others

• Zotero Online Account Setup Notes
  • Navigate to Zotero.org
  • Click 'Login' (top right)
  • Click 'Register for a Free Account'
  • Create account
    • Retain your login information for future use
  • Authenticate account using the email sent to you
