Getting Started with Bloomberg

What is it?

Bloomberg Professional Service, a powerful database that allows users to do business, financial, and economic analysis.

Where is it?

The University Library has 3 Bloomberg Terminals on the 2nd floor in the Academic Commons, Ask the information desk if you need directions to the terminals.

How do I use it?

You need to create an account with Bloomberg. Some students choose to use the Bloomberg Market Concepts program to become Bloomberg Certified. Use the different tabs on this guide for help with the keyboard functions, lists of common shortcuts, and help with certification.

Conn/DFT: Use to log in
Cancel: Use to abort action
<CMDTY>: Commodities, futures, options, spot rates - F9
<CORP>: Corporate Debt - F3
<CRNCY>: Spots, futures, options, forex on over 100 currencies - F11
<EQUITY>: ADRs, mutual funds, rights, stocks, options, warrants - F8
<GOVT>: Worldwide sovereign and agency securities - F2
<INDEX>: Global equity indices, economic indices - F10
<LAW>: Legal, regulatory and compliance information - F12
<M-MKT>: Continuously issued and short-term dated paper - F5
<MTGE>: Mortgage markets instruments - F4

<MUNI>: U.S. municipality issued debt - F6

 

Another way to access these functions without hitting the shortcut key: Type the code withing <> and hit Enter/Go.

For instance type CORP then hit Go to access Corporate debt information.

ENTER/GO: Activates all commands
MENU: Go back one level
PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN: Navigate between pages

Certification - Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC)

An 8-hour self-paced e-learning program (videos), which will teach you how to use Bloomberg to research the financial markets introducing the user to 70 of the most used functions.The program consists of four modules: economic indicators, currencies, fixed income, and equities. Once you complete the course you will receive a certificate of completion. (Note: the training program is included with IUPUI's subscription if done at the terminals in the library.)

To get to the Bloomberg Market Concepts training program, type BMC <Go>.

This training consists of 4 Modules:

  1. Economic Indicators: Primacy of GDP, Monitoring GDP, Forecasting GDP
  2. Currencies: Currency Market Mechanics, Currency Valuation, Central Banks and Currencies, Currency risks
  3. Fixed Income: The Roots of the Bond Market, Bond Valuation Drivers, Central Bankers and Interest Rates, The Yield Curve and Why it Matters, Movements in the Yield Curve
  4. Equities: Introducing the Stock Market, The Nature of Equities, Equity Research, Absolute Valuation, Relative Valuation
