Finding Books: Catalogs at IUPUI and Beyond

Tips and Tricks:

  • If you need more help with searching for books, requesting books, and using Inter Library Loan, please check out the guide on How to Find Books.
  • If you need help accessing ebooks, check out the guide to Using Ebooks.

Finding Books on Specific Topics, and Searching by Subject

Enter a keyword that describes your topic.
In the library catalog IUCAT, it is usually best to keep your search simple.

Examples: bilingual education; gothic architecture; greek utopias; cochlear implants.

Review the search results page for relevant items. The results page includes basic information on an item like title, publication date, format, and campuses that have the item.

NOTE: If you only want books you can access immediately, limit the campus to Indianapolis. If a book isn't in Indianapolis, you can still get it. Click on the title to get more information on the book, then clickRequest This to have the book delivered to IUPUI.

When you find a relevant book, click on the Title to see the full record.

The full catalog record includes subject headings that describe what a book is about. To find more books with the same heading click on that heading.

Write down call numbers of relevant books (or text them to your phone through IUCAT).
Books are organized on the shelves by subject, so when you find a book on the shelf browse the section for other relevant books.

Your catalog search may include items with call numbers from more than one area, so you may want to browse more than just one area.

Finding Books on the Shelves

Books are arranged using the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system.

If you wish to physically browse the shelves, listed below are the starting call numbers of some of the most commonly sought topics in the collection. Most philanthropy and nonprofit management books are located in the Joseph & Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library on the 2nd floor of University Library, but many relevant books are shelved on the 3rd and 4th floors in the general collection.

eBooks

We have been investing in ebooks for many years and have a wide variety available. We are also buying ebooks through our On Demand service (books already listed in the catalog) or with a request to a librarian.

If you cannot find ebooks in your topics in our catalog please contact me. While not all books are available for libraries to buy in ebook, am happy to check, and if I can't buy the exact book you want I will find you alternatives.

To find ebooks in IUCAT:

  1. Search as normal in the search bar or with advanced search
  2. Use the faceted search tools on the right: limit your results to CAMPUS: INDIANAPOLIS. This is very important - ebooks available at other campus libraries are not open to us, due to licensing restrictions.
  3. Use the faceted search tools on the right: limit your results to EBOOKS.
  4. On the item's page, use the link under the URL field to get access to the ebook. You may need to click through multiple pass-through links to get access.
  5. If you are not on the VPN, you will be prompted to login in, this is your normal CAS login and you do not need any special accounts.
